Description

I'm running out of fuzzy races to draw for this setting! I suppose I'll have to draw some humans soon...

-----

The Kolkan are a race of tiger humanoids that live in the torrid, tropical lands of the Circassid Empire. Both geographically and culturally separated from the Checchiatari, they effectively occupy the military caste of the Circassids. Soldiers and officers form a higher percentage of the Kolkan population than any other race, and most troops stay locked into military service for their entire lifetime.

Over a century ago, the Caliphate of Man called upon the Maharajah of Circas to participate in the White Jihad. The Empire, while teeming with citizens, is still much smaller and proportionally weaker to the enormous Caliphate of Man. As a result, the Maharajah sent an expeditionary unit of Kolkan to fight the Checchiatari rather than risk war with their northern neighbor. The Kolkan initially chafed at the thought of massacring other beastfolk, but moved forward regardless as a matter of duty and dignity.

They made landfall in spite of fierce fighting at sea, then let loose the Sepoys, who confounded and outmaneuvered the Checchiatari efforts to stop them. When the Kolkan successfully captured and occupied several key ports, they forced the Checchiatari to the peace table where, in a shocking interpretation of their orders, they negotiated trade terms with their blood relatives, declared victory, and returned home.

Trade with the Checchiatari has since brought fabulous wealth and prosperity to the Circassid Empire, an act entirely attributed to the initiative and martial prowess of the Kolkan. In the Caliphate, however, the Kolkan are still looked at as deceitful, having honor only when it is expedient.

The caste system of the Circassids is cracking under the pressure of the industrial revolution, and just as their once ironclad role in the Maharaja's army is now in question so too is the traditional patriarchal nature of their culture. Females now work in factories, and as a result have gained both financial and intellectual freedoms they never had.

The old order of things is beginning to crumble. If there is a place for the Kolkan in the affairs of the future, it won't be enough to simply claim it by birthright. They will have to fight for it.
