Evil

Fri May 30, 2008, 8:00 AM
Here's a question for you folks out there-

I've made my opinion on evil pretty clear to some folks. I believe it to be an inherent quality in every individual that manifests itself in different amounts and at different times. However, as with many things I could be wrong- or just undereducated. What do you think of evil?

In particular, is it real? Do you think there is such a thing, or that evil is even definable? What, to you, constitutes evil? Is there evil within you?

I don't see evil as necessarily a force in itself. I look at it like the absence of something.

If I can get religous for a moment, let us consider that everything good is... God. But this analogy will work if we just talk about good itself. Anyway, Evil is simply the absence of God to some degree. Lack of caring or compassion, love, conscience or what have you. The farther we get away from that, the more evil it starts to become. The devil could be considered a spiritual being that by it's own decision has removed itself as far away from God as was possible. Heaven is close to God, Hell is very far away from God. Evil is the lack of the virtues that make humanity something more than just instinct and desire.

I always thought of evil as something that exists within every person on this earth. We are all capable of evil acts but I think most of us refuse to let these evil acts dominate our existance.

It is true that many cultures have different views on what constitutes good and what constitutes evil but all of them believe that evil exists and that it should be fought against.

Evil...kind of a deep concept. Told a friend recently that I think in black in white but see the world in shades of gray, meaning that while I know myself to the point that I know what consists (for me) righteous behavior and evil behavior, I know that the world nowadays attempts to and often succeeds to blend the lines of black and white into fuzzy increments of gray. ::iconlittlefuzzydevil:: is right in this respect: Evil is relative (again, what I will and will not do based on my morals and standards may be completely different than that of someone else.)
However, I do not believe that evil is inherent. If that was so, we'd have a lot more Chucky-like babies born. "Evil," or the knowledge and the pleasure of doing wrong and the subsequent harmful actions thereof, and its twin sister Apathy are not so much a learned "qualitys" but absorbed qualities, qualities absorbed from the often overly open stance that society allows. I agree, children should be allowed to grow and to learn, and, therefore, they should be allowed to question and such. But I also believe they should be protected from asocial and antisocial behavior, and, when faced with such things, should be helped along in their education as to why such things happen. But those are just my thoughts.
Could go on, but more ramblings about would probably go on for a while, so I'll leave off here for now. Enjoy! :)

Evil is in itself a very-vague subject, but it is something that shows up constantly. You're right; what is 'evil'...? Consider my current two antagonists, Travis and Ashees. What makes them villains? Is it the simple fact that they are against my protagonist, Crimson, or is there something deeper in their personas?

I think that 'evil' is not so much a quality within a person, something able to be defined by psychological examination, but more the effect of actions taken by that person versus the whole, or 'greater good'. Ashees is not evil because he attacks Crimson; he is evil because he attacks someone that is innocent of the situation, aka Natsume. Travis is not evil because he wants a piece of the wolf's hide, he is evil because he manipulates Kei against his will.

It is not only the intentions of one's actions, but the effect one's actions has, in my opinion, which says good or evil. No one is inherently evil or interently good; it is something to strive for, either way. Action begets reaction, or so Newton once thought.

I find good and evil to be immeasurable concepts. Its like perfection, no one can achieve either. No one has ever been completely evil or completely good. All "evil" people have done at least one small thing that is considered good, e.x. helped a family member, etc. And all "good" people have done at least one bad thing, e.x. stole a cookie as a kid, etc.
