What gets the hits?

Thu Jun 19, 2008, 9:52 AM
I've been on DA for a while now, on and off, and put up a lot of artwork, and while I appreciate the feedback from fans and anyone kind enough to venture in here I can't help but notice that wherever I post my artwork there seems to be limited interest in it, and it's diminishing.

What am I doing wrong? Is there anything I can do to get more traffic? It seems to be a problem both here and on Deviantart, and I admit I'm a bit jealous that some of my friends seem to be pulling further and further away from me publicity-wise by the day. I've tried to observe the way they do things and even asked them what they're doing right, but they haven't been able to answer that question and I feel like I'm sort of treading water.

So yes, I'll admit it, I like the attention and I like to feel like I'm contributing something... which is why I feel so bummed about achieving neither despite my efforts. I'm all ears for any answers, no matter how tough they are.

I know exactly how you feel man, I'm almost at 900 deviations and been here for nearly 4 years, but so far only around 5 of the over 100 people who watch me actually give a crap. ^.^;

You shouldn't really care man. If people don't want to look at your artwork, its their loss, not yours.

To tell you the truth, I have no idea. I coulda sworn that the stuff you're doin' woulda made you a more recognized name on the Web, so I don't understand the problem, myself. :\

I think there are many way to increase attention on your work:

-Draw porn
-Draw fetish porn
-Do a lot of pubblic relation: Fav everyone, watch everyone, etc.

Ultimately, I can only offer guesses and suggestions but I will try.

Your focus is the Jewel Vixens. That's cool but the main thing you upload here is comic pages from your website and you do about one a month. I don't know why but comics do not do well on DA compared to pinup stuff. They just don't. Most people don't want to bother to read them as they seem to have incredibly low attention spans. My pinup stuff always does better, gets more faves and more new attention. It's just what people like.

My suggestion is to start doing some random art instead of the monthly JV stuff. Show us some pinup stuff of the characters and really challenge yourself in the process. People like things that are sexy, funny, full of action, full of detail, artistically challenging.

You might also want to break out of your mold sometime and do some different things. Just to see if you can. Do some funny fan art stuff. I shudder to suggest that but it can generate some new interest in your stuff. I have a pic of a digimon character that I did rather quickly and threw a cheesy photo background behind just to be done and it is nearly my most popular piece. That is kinda frustrating when stuff I love and worked hard on does not get that much attention.

Offer some free art or do some trades! This is a community site so it helps to get involved in the community. You can cultivate people's attention in you by surfing for new art on the main page and in the thumbshare forum.

All in all, don't be discouraged by what the masses think. Do you enjoy what you do? If you are not getting the attention you think your art deserves, perhaps it is time to do something different with your art. Try some new things and see what happens. Take a good look at other artists and see if they are popular for their art or popular because they play the popularity game here very well. There are extreme examples of both.

I hope that helped some. Don't get discouraged.

I think you're right, Egg, and from here on I'm gonna try to turn over a new leaf. I am capable of and possibly happier doing pinup and portrait work and would like to do more work in that. It'll still have some of the same concepts- applying myself, trying to push everything a bit harder, and so on, but it won't be restricted to just JV and it won't just be comics anymore. That will solve both the problem of not having any art to post and not having any interest... I hope. If not, the only loss I have is my time, since I should be getting better with every bit of application.

If they don't want to look at my art, whether or not I think they're right, they have a reason... and while it's silly to ask the people who DO look at my art what those reasons are, I'd still like to know them.

LOL, maybe... who knows, I should go out there and work on my tan with them.
